General information

Torre Nasparo stands out among the other coastal towers that proudly dot the suggestive Salentino coastline. Its imposing presence is not only the result of time and weather, but is the result of a direct order, dating back to 1565, by the Duke of Alcalá. Since then, this structure has witnessed undaunted the flow of historical events, crossing different eras and dominations with a pride. Over the centuries, its walls have heard a succession of voices and stories, so much so that they have taken various names that reflect the passage of time and cultures that have shaped this land. Documented evidence places it in the historical landscape since 1569, when it already appeared with prestige among the towers listed by the Spanish Royal Court, confirming its strategic importance and its fundamental role in the defense of the Salento coasts.

The story

The thousand-year history of Torre Nasparo is an intricate web of events and anecdotes that reflect the vicissitudes of the local community over the centuries. Through valuable documents preserved in the Archivio di Stato di Napoli, we can immerse ourselves in the details of its construction in the distant XVI century, a period of fervent building activity that saw rise numerous towers along the Salento coast. However, the construction of Torre Nasparo was not only an architectural act, but also entailed the imposition of fees for its maintenance, a common practice at the time to ensure the safety of the coasts and the maintenance of defensive structures.

Over the centuries, the tower has undergone many transformations, changing keepers and functions in response to the changing needs of the time. From the original spotting scouts, tasked with scanning the horizon in search of enemy threats, until 1777 when, in an act of concrete solidarity, “Invalidi” took custody of it, the tower continued to play its role as silent guardian of the Salento coasts.
