The history of the Charles V Castle Lecce
The Castle of Charles V of Leccewas rebuilt starting in 1537 on the remains of a building dating back to the 12th century.
The sovereign wanted to protect the city from possible attacks from the sea and the project was entrusted, between 1539 and 1540, to the famous military architect Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya, who transformed the pre-existing medieval structure into an imposing fortress. The ancient castle was surrounded by thick walls, lanceolate bastions and a new moat, while the previous one was adapted into underground tunnels for multiple uses.
The castle became not only a defensive bastion, but also the symbol of imperial power, designed to impress and intimidate.
