General information

Torre del Sasso is also known as Torre del Mito because of its location. It rises on the crest of the Serra del Mito 116 metres above sea level, and is one of the tallest among the coastal towers, rising from a rocky spur overlooking the sea and surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation. This imposing fortification dominates the road section that connects Marina di Andrano to Tricase Porto, on the renowned coastal road Otranto-Leuca, often cited as one of the most beautiful in Italy.

Built as part of a tower system along the entire Salento coast, its function was to provide sightings and defense in case of attacks by the Turks or the corsairs. Although partially collapsed, it still preserves the majesty of the strategic work that was, with its truncopiramidale base and the overlying body to square plan.

Accessible today through difficult tracts, Torre del Sasso is a precious fragment of history that testifies to the courage and vigilance of past generations, who have been able to defend their lands from threats coming from the sea.

The story

The history of Torre del Sasso dates back to late 16th century, as attested by documents from the time that confirm its existence and strategic role. Mentioned in ancient acts and cartography as “Torre del Sasso”, its presence is well documented in local chronicles. In 1584, the University of Tricase appointed two procurators to manage the fees due to the watchmen and horsemen who guarded the tower. In the following years, various documents testify to the importance of the tower as coastal defence point, with the payment of salaries to its keepers and its maintenance. The tower has been through many vicissitudes over the centuries, but in recent years it has generated strong interest from the local community for its preservation. Groups such as the ASD MTB Tricase played a key role in drawing attention to the tower’s state of decay and promoting initiatives for its restoration and consolidation. In 2021 a major shoring project was funded, marking a first step towards the preservation and restoration of the site. Subsequently, in 2023, further work was undertaken to ensure the safety of the structure pending a complete restoration. These efforts reflect the community’s commitment to preserving the rich historical and cultural heritage of the Salento region.

The structure

Despite its evident decline, the Torre del Sasso still preserves its aura of ancient greatness. This striking ruin has a structure characterized by a trunk-pyramidal base slightly inclined, on which stands vertically the parallelepiped body of the floor. In the lower part of the tower was the cistern, while on the floor the towers watched carefully the coasts through the windows, remains intact one of these windows facing north towards Castro, while the south side is reduced to rubble. Inside, it is still possible to observe some details of the floor, which originally had a single room with simple barrel vault. There are no traces of drainages and the tower lacks taurus marcapiano, probably suggesting a remaking of the external walls in ancient times, according to some experts. The parallelepiped body shows stone edges arranged in regular blocks, while the walls are made of irregular stones. The roof drain that once channeled rainwater to the cistern, now exposed and visible from the floor. Despite its ruins, the Sasso Tower continues to tell the story of generations past and exert a timeless charm on visitors who venture to explore it.
