General information on the Sidereus Astronomical Park
The Sidereus Astronomical Park, also known as Salve Planetarium, is a point of reference for astronomy lovers and for anyone who wants to get closer to space. Located in the countryside of Salve, it extends over 5,000 m2 surrounded by olive trees and away from artificial lights. This science park is an oasis for sky enthusiasts, but also a perfect place for families, students and tourists looking for an unusual experience to try in Salento.
The park is divided into 6 areas that allow you to experience a journey into Multisensory Astronomy which will involve your sight, your hearing and your touch, for a unique and immersive experience.
At Sidereus Astronomical Park, however, the possibilities for fun and exploration are not limited to star observation. During the year, the park organizes special events such as thematic evenings dedicated to particular celestial phenomena, such as eclipses or meteor showers.
For the little ones, there are creative workshops that make astronomy fun and accessible: from building small telescopes to discovering the constellations. Students can live a unique educational experience, thanks to expert guides who explain the mysteries of the cosmos in a simple and exciting way.

The origin of the Sidereus Astronomical Park is closely linked to the passion of Vito Lecci, an amateur astronomer from Salento who dedicated his life to making the sky known to the curious and passionate about the celestial vault. Thanks to his determination, this place has transformed into a point of reference for scientific dissemination, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

The name “Sidereus” is not accidental: it recalls the famous Sidereus Nuncius by Galileo Galilei, a revolutionary work that forever changed the way we look at the sky.
Structure of the Sidereus Astronomical Park
Entering the Sidereus Astronomical Park is like entering a small world apart, where every architectural and structural detail has been designed to encourage connection with the sky and the universe. As we were saying, the park is made up of 6 areas:
1. Interactive Planetarium:
The Interactive Planetarium offers a unique experience, where you choose the topics and level of detail. With a 6 meter dome and 50 air-conditioned seats, you will be able to explore the sky of both hemispheres, the 88 constellations, planets, galaxies and astronomical phenomena, accompanied by personalized explanations that satisfy every curiosity.
2. Terrace of the Stars
With a series of telescopes at your disposal, you will be able to directly observe a wide range of celestial objects: from the surface of the Moon with seas, mountains and mountain ranges, to planets such as Saturn with its rings, Jupiter and its Galilean satellites, or Mars with its polar caps. You will also discover splendid emission and planetary nebulae, fascinating open and globular star clusters, and mysterious binary star systems, for a total immersion in the cosmos.

Radio telescope
It is asix-petalled parabola, with a diameter of 2.4 meters, oriented towards the sky. Able to pick up the weak radio frequencies emitted by the stars, it channels them towards a special receiver, thus allowing you to listen to the… “voice of the stars“!

Science Gallery
The Science Gallery is divided into 3 areas: the LIAMA, dating back to the mid-19th century, houses extremely rare artefacts from space, including objects flown aboard the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle. The Educational Room, large and bright, hosts an exhibition of meteorites of different sizes, including rare fragments of lunar and Martian rock, as well as a reconstruction of the Apollo moon landing. Finally, the Amphitheatre is the ideal place for outdoor meetings and scientific experiments.

Archaeoastronomy
An area that hosts ancient time measuring instruments, such as a functioning Mayan Pyramid, an Egyptian Market and a Moon Sundial, and offers a unique opportunity to understand the Earth-Sun motions and the modern time reference system, with its practical intentional errors. You will also be able to admire and observe many other sundials in operation, enriched by detailed explanations.

Meteorites
A collection of meteorites of different sizes and types from all over the world.
At the facility it is possible to request the creation of sundials and astronomical calendars, created after an inspection.
Sidereus Astronomical Park tickets and timetables
The cost of tickets for the Sidereus Astronomical Park is around €15 and there are reductions based on age.
Theguided tours last 2 hours and it is possible to book private evenings. It is advisable to check the details on the official website, where you will find updated information on the event calendar, prices and any special offers. Reservation is always mandatory.
Generally, the park is open in the evening, when the absence of natural light allows you to observe the sky in all its beauty. Upon reservation, it is possible to take part in daytime visits dedicated to school groups, organized groups and enthusiasts. Booking in advance is always a good idea, especially in the summer months and weekends.
Where it is and how to get there
The Sidereus Astronomical Park is located in Salve, a small town in Salento easily reachable by car. From Lecce, take the SS274 towards Santa Maria di Leuca, exit at Salve and follow the signs for the park.
The location, immersed in the countryside, is ideal for guaranteeing clear skies and no light pollution, offering a unique experience.
What to do nearby
After exploring the wonders of the sky at Sidereus Astronomical Park, Salento offers you a wide range of experiences to enjoy. Not far from the park, you can relax on the beaches of Pescoluse, famous for their crystal clear waters and golden sand which have earned it the nickname “Maldives of Salento”.
For a cultural experience, visit the ancient village of Salve, with its characteristic streets, the Church of San Nicola Magno and the underground oil mill. Nature lovers, however, will be able to explore the nearby Parco Naturale Litorale di Ugento, a protected area full of paths, dunes and lagoons where Mediterranean flora and fauna will surprise you.
The day ends in the best possible way with a typical dinner in one of the many farmhouses in the area, where you can taste Salento specialties such as orecchiette, friselle and pasticciotti, accompanied by a good glass of local wine.
