General information Green Grotto Salento

The Green Grotto in Salento, not to be confused with the one in Capri, is located along the coast of the Marina di Andrano, in the province of Lecce. Its name derives from the spectacular color of the water which, thanks to the sunlight that penetrates the cavity, is tinged with a bright green shade. This optical effect makes the Andrano Green Cave a unique place of its kind.

Access to Green Grotto beach is relatively simple. It is a small rocky bay, don’t expect strips of soft, golden sand. In fact, here it is the low and jagged cliff that reigns supreme!
The cavity directly overlooks the sea and you can therefore reach it by swimming, by boat or even with a short kayak ride. Entrance to the Andrano Green Grotto is free, ideal for a quick visit during a day at the seaside.

Story

The Green Cave in Marina Andrano is a place that has fascinated visitors and locals for centuries. The rock formation is the result of the erosive action of the sea, which over time has sculpted the Salento coast giving rise to spectacular cavities. The Andrano Lecce Green Cave owes its recent fame to the luminous effect created inside it but in the past it was already known as a natural refuge by fishermen in the area.

Exploring the Green Cave in Salento you will immediately notice the way in which nature has shaped every corner of the cavity, creating stalactites, ravines and an almost mystical atmosphere. During sunny days, when the light penetrates just right, the cave transforms into a marine cathedral with a bright green ceiling and walls embellished with sea daisies.
