General information Orte Otranto

The name of the bay comes from the term “ortor”, which means “where the sun rises”, a poetic reference to the charm of this location. Surrounded by a low cliff covered with bushes and aromatic plants, the bay can be reached via a suggestive path that crosses a pine forest and Mediterranean scrub. This place is ideal for lovers of wild nature, silence and peace, where it is possible to relax among small isolated coves, cool off with a dip and let yourself be enveloped by Mediterranean scents.

Characteristics of the Orte Bay

The Baia delle Orte offers a unique environment: the intersection between the salt waters of the sea and the fresh water springs, such as those of the Fiume d’Oro and the Fontana, creates cold currents that make the area particularly fascinating for snorkelling enthusiasts. Furthermore, the rich and varied marine fauna contributes to making this destination a favorite for those seeking diving in crystal clear waters. Far from the bathing establishments and the confusion, the bay is a place where you can admire the peaks of the Balkans on the horizon on the clearest days.

What to See in the Surroundings of the Baia delle Orte Otranto

The beauties in the surroundings of the Orte Bay are numerous and unmissable.

  • Torre del Serpe: An ancient defensive bastion rich in history and legends. The tower takes its name from a snake which, according to tradition, disoriented sailors during Saracen raids by extinguishing the flame of the lighthouse. An evocative place that combines historical charm and breathtaking views.
  • Bauxite Quarry: A short distance away there is a spectacular lake formed in a former bauxite quarry. The intense emerald water, surrounded by red rocks, creates a unique visual contrast, ideal for photography and nature lovers.
  • Punta Palascìa Lighthouse: The easternmost point of Italy, where the sun rises first. This lighthouse offers an extraordinary panorama and represents an obligatory stop for anyone visiting the area.

If you love hiking, the Orte Educational Forest is the ideal starting point for immersive walks in nature. During the journey, you will be able to discover aromatic plants typical of the Mediterranean scrub and admire incredible views overlooking the sea.

Another must is a visit to the nearby Grotta della Palombara, reachable by swimming or by boat. This natural jewel, formed following the collapse of the limestone walls along the stretch of coast, is easily accessible and not very crowded.

For those who also want to explore the surrounding areas, the historic center of Otranto is an obligatory stop. After a day at the beach, getting lost among its cobbled streets is a must, as well as visiting the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and admiring its floor mosaic.
