Since ancient times, Castro was the site of important commercial exchanges and is divided into two parts, Castro Marina, where the marina is located, and Castro Superiore, a hilly area rich in historical sites. Start your visit from the Aragonese Castle, the site of historical interest that dominates the village from above. Built in the period between the 12th and 13th centuries on the remains of a Byzantine fortress, today it houses an archaeological museum where you can admire finds that testify to the glorious past ofCastro. Among the most interesting, there are the remains of the statue of Minerva, found right here. The MAR di Castro can be accessed for a fee and the ticket costs €6. A satisfactory visit takes approximately 70 minutes.
Continuing towards the Castro Cathedral, built in the 12th century and consecrated to the Virgin Annunziata, you will notice the elegant fusion of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The cathedral was built on the remains of a Byzantine church and inside you can breathe a solemn and evocative atmosphere. Don’t miss the Byzantine Crypt, a small hidden jewel that preserves the remains of some frescoes, including the one depicting Saint John the Baptist.
As you enter the alleys of the village you will come across the ancient Messapian walls, evidence of the ancient people who inhabited these lands before the Romans. Its sight will certainly make you reflect on how many civilizations have passed through this small village, leaving traces of their passage in every stone.

The center of Castro is entirely pedestrian, so wear your most comfortable shoes to move easily through the alleys and stone staircases.

Where to park near the historic center of Castro
Since the historic center of Castrois closed to traffic, you will have to park outside the walls. Fortunately, there are several well-signposted car parks, both free and paid, in the immediate vicinity of the village.
The Castro Municipal Parking is one of the most convenient options, located a few minutes walk from the centre. The parking area is indicated forbuses, campers, cars, scooters and bicycles.
Despite being quite large (it can hold around 240 vehicles), during the summer season it can be crowded and fill up very quickly, make sure you arrive early.
Prices and opening times
Access to the historic center of Castro is free but some attractions, such as the Aragonese Castle and the archaeological museum, require an entrance fee.
The cathedral is, however, open to the public free of charge, but a small donation is always appreciated for the maintenance of the place.
Opening hours vary depending on the season, with extended hours during the summer. It’s always a good idea to check updated hours before your visit, especially if you plan to visit the castle or museum.
Where it is and how to get to the historic center of Castro
Castro is located on the eastern coast of Salento, about 40 minutes by car from Lecce and 30 minutes from Otranto. If you are traveling by car, you can follow the SS16 from Lecce to Maglie, and then continue along the SP363 to Castro. Alternatively, you can take a train to Lecce and then a local bus that will take you directly to Castro historic centre.
If you prefer the comfort of an organized trip, there are numerous daily excursions that depart from the main cities of Salento and will take you to discover not only Castro, but also the other wonders of the Salento coast.
During high season, the Salento by bus service is active, but keep in mind that public transport in the area may be limited, so the car remains the most practical choice for exploring this part of Puglia.
Activities to do in the surrounding area
In addition to the beauty of the historic center of Castro, the surrounding area offers numerous activities to enrich your visit. You can take a walk to the Grotta Zinzulusa, one of the most spectacular sea caves in Puglia, famous for its limestone formations and transparent waters. If you love the sea, don’t miss the opportunity to take a boat ride along the coast, exploring the hidden inlets and coves.
A few kilometers from the village, then, you will find the Cala of Acquaviva, a small corner of paradise hidden among the rocks. This small natural fjord, with incredibly clear and fresh waters, is perfect for a regenerating dip, especially on hot summer days.
