The Torre del Serpe, also known as the Torre del Serpente of Otranto or Torre dell’Idro, is one of the numerous coastal towers that were built in Salento during the period of the Saracen incursions.
These towers had a fundamental role in the defense of the territory: they functioned as lookout and signaling stations to promptly warn of the arrival of enemy ships.
Today, the tower is a ruin but retains its majesty intact, especially when you observe it at dawn, as the sun rises over the Adriatic. The most recent restoration, which took place in 1997, resulted in a complete distortion of the work.

History of Torre del Serpe
This tower has ancient origins, probably dating back to the Roman period, although it was during the medieval era that it assumed the central surveillance role.
Otranto, being the easternmost city in Italy, was for centuries exposed to pirate incursions and the aims of the eastern empires that controlled the Mediterranean. The coastal towers, including the Snake Tower, were essential to protect the coastal cities from looting and invasions.
Over the centuries, the tower was restored and modified several times, but as time passed, and with the reduction of threats from the sea, its use became less and less relevant. Legend of the Serpent Tower

It is said that, in ancient times, a huge serpent climbed from the tower at night to drink the oil from the lamp that served as a lighthouse for sailors. This serpent, a symbol of misfortune and destruction, was the reason why many ships were wrecked along the coast, unable to see the light that should have guided them.
According to popular tradition, the snake also represented a dire sign for the city: every time its figure appeared, it meant that something terrible was about to happen. Some link the legend to the famous siege of 1480, when the Turks attempted to take the city but were discouraged by the ravenous beast.

The Torre del Serpe cannot be visited inside, as it is now a ruin, but you can get closer to admire the structure up close. The site is accessible for free all year round, and one of the best times to visit it is at dawn, when the colors of the sky and sea create a unique atmosphere.
Although there are no specific opening hours, we advise you to arrive with a good margin of time before the sun goes down to enjoy the natural landscape that surrounds the tower.
Where it is and how to get to the Torre del Serpe
The Torre del Serpe is located a few kilometers from the center of Otranto, along the coast. To get there, just follow the signs for the seafront and continue towards the south-east. If you are by car, you can park near the tower and then take a short walk through a path that will take you directly to the tower.
If you prefer to use public transport, consider that during the summer season there are buses such as Salento by Bus which connect Otranto with the main points of interest in the area, including the Torre del Serpe. However, we recommend that you check the updated timetable before leaving, as journeys may be limited. If, however, you love walking, you can reach the Torre del Serpe on foot from Otranto.
