It rises on the crest of the Serra del Mito 116 metres above sea level, and is one of the <\/span><b>tallest among the coastal towers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, rising from a rocky spur overlooking the sea and surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation. This imposing fortification dominates the road section that connects <\/span><b>Marina di Andrano to Tricase Porto<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the renowned coastal road Otranto-Leuca, often cited as one of the most beautiful in Italy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Built as part of a<\/span><b> tower system along the entire Salento coast<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, its function was to <\/span><b>provide sightings and defense in case of attacks by the Turks or the corsairs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Mentioned in ancient acts and cartography as &#8220;Torre del Sasso&#8221;, its presence is well documented in local chronicles. In 1584, the University of Tricase appointed two procurators to manage the fees due to the watchmen and horsemen who guarded the tower. In the following years, various documents testify to the importance of the tower as <\/span><b>coastal defence point<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the payment of salaries to its keepers and its maintenance. The tower has been through many vicissitudes over the centuries, but in recent years it has generated<\/span><b> strong interest from the local community for its preservation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Groups such as the <\/span><b>ASD MTB Tricase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> played a key role in drawing attention to the tower\u2019s state of decay and promoting initiatives for its restoration and consolidation. In <\/span><b>2021 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a major shoring project was funded, marking a first step towards the preservation and restoration of the site. Subsequently, in <\/span><b>2023<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, further work was undertaken to ensure the safety of the structure pending a complete restoration. This striking ruin has a structure characterized by a <\/span><b>trunk-pyramidal base<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> slightly inclined, on which stands vertically the parallelepiped body of the floor. In the lower part of the tower was the cistern, while on the floor the towers watched carefully the coasts through the windows, remains intact one of these windows facing north towards Castro, while the south side is reduced to rubble. Inside, it is still possible to observe some details of the floor, which originally had a single room with simple barrel vault. There are no traces of drainages and the tower lacks taurus marcapiano, probably suggesting a remaking of the external walls in ancient times, according to some experts. The <\/span><b>parallelepiped body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows stone edges arranged in regular blocks, while the walls are made of irregular stones. The roof drain that once channeled rainwater to the cistern, now exposed and visible from the floor. However, given its nature as a ruin and the surrounding environment, it is advisable to visit during the day and pay attention to your safety, especially in the most vulnerable and unstable areas. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Where is it and how to get to the Sasso Tower<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Torre del Sasso is located in the territory of the municipality of Tricase, in the province of Lecce, on the Salento peninsula, along the picturesque Adriatic coast. If you arrive by car, you can take the <\/span><b>coastal road Otranto-Leuca<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and follow the signs for Tricase Porto. The tower is located along this road, right on the stretch that connects the Marina di Andrano to Tricase Porto, making it easily<\/span><b> accessible by car<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Leave the car about 2 km from the tower and continue on foot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also possible and recommended to reach the Tower of the rock <\/span><b>by bike<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because being inserted in a natural context, is one of the points of interest of several <\/span><b>cycling and hiking routes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the area.
